Tournament question
03/11/06 at 03:31:05
Quote Print Post
Looking at my schedule and it looks like I should have one of the weekends off in May.  I've been really interested in fishing one of the tournaments on Lk. Wash.  Unfortunately I don't have a bass boat, but an aluminum boat with a 75hp 4stroke yamaha on the back.  The boat will do around 39mph.  My question is, will I be left at the docks when everyone else is at the best fishing spots?  Do they give handicaps for aluminum boat owners? Grin

Well you won't blast anyone to their spots, but it doesn't mean you can't catch fish. I would suggest fishing the WBC event on Potholes if you have a weekend and the money to travel over there. You will have less boats to compete with and we have aluminum boats that will be there. Plus the evenings hanging out with the club are worth the trip alone. You will learn plenty too.

Hey Rob,
I just noticed the really cool blue jumpsuit that you are wearing in your posting photo.  Is that double knit or polyester?  My granddad left me a few pairs and they are too small for me, perhaps you are interested?

Y2Says, as a fellow aluminium boat owner that is our handicap.  We will be passed by all the "big boys" but sometimes we can get to places they can't.  As long as you have all the reg. equipement, livewell, killswitch, etc... your more than welcome.

Y2,

My first boat had a 70 Yami on her and I did just fine competing against the bigger boats. Placed in the top 5 on a regular basis with the Kent Cub fishing out of that rig.
Its not the rig, its your ability and confidence that catches the fish. Like Rob says, Potholes is a great place to fish out of your rig and you have just as good a chance as the rest of us with our faster boats.

WBC's angler of the year (2004) beat out all the big boys with a 45hp V hull that only ran on half it's cylinders.

Way to go Dave.

I spent the first bunch of years I fished tournaments fishing from a 16' Statos with a 70 HP Evinrude. I could get up to 45 or so. All the big boats flying by me. At the scales speed does not count for anything. It sucks to be the fastest loser. I won my fair share of tournaments from that little boat. I think in the long run it made me a better fisherman. I had to concentrate on fewer areas and catch the fish that were within the range of my own boat. Plus my bank account was always better off. When I went up to a 175 HP 18' boat the gas pumps ate up what little earnings I could manage to make. Don't let the size or speed of your boat stop you. If you have the knowledge and skill you can overcome the handicap easily. Plus you will get just a little bit more out of winning a tournament with what many would consider sub par equipment. None of that matters if you can put fish in the boat. I always tried to find the fish others flew either right by or right over. You can win that way. So go fish and enjoy the competition.

Thanks for the encouraging replies.  I would love to join you guys at the pot holes, but weekends are tough for me to get off.  That's why I'm excited about May, since I should have one of the early weekends off.  The reason why I'm interested in the Lk. Wash tournament is that last year in May my buddy and I caught six around 21lbs and biggest 5 went over 18lbs.  Looking at past tournaments, that should land us in the money.  Of course we werent fishing with 50 other boats either.

Rob, you know I luv ya bro, that is why I am sending you a pair of white loafers to match the outfit.  They have a stain or two on them, but they should be just fine.

Y2 - Lk Wa is great, but Potholes rules in the spring.  I just have to say that if you can get there, do so.  It rocks.  Good Luck.
