Well just because your in 30 ft of water doesn't mean your fishing vertically. Actually I have never just stood there and wiggled a dropshot straight down. I have always dragged them. Some guys up here are still pretty good at it. Not just in California where it is almost the best way to catch fish.

you can drag in 11 inch fish all day on dropshot at Roosevelt....Vertical, Horizontal, dragging, double hook, tripple hook, you name it.   8)
