Okay...here we go again......

One day when Bobby Bass came home from school he hid from his mother...which he had never done before.

His mom found him hiding in his room and questioned him to come out and talk.
As he came into view she saw what she had dreaded.....his fins were red and scarred showing the signs her son was getting of age.

"How did you hurt your fins" she asked, he resisted and then said...
" Davie took me to see some girls at the ...Spawning Flat."
"OH MY!" she barked and continued...
"Your too young for that!"

"Mom I'm almost Three seasons old....All the three year fish were there!" he countered...
"And dont worry, I did'nt spawn or anything..."
"Howard...Get in here our son is Nesterbating!" she yelled
Howard...a much smaller and meek fellow came into the room and said in a quiet voice..."Yes Dear?" Seeing his son he yelled.."THATS MY BOY!!!WHOOOOHOOOOO!"

To answer your question I would quess three years but remember......Nesterbation is a normal part of adolescence.

Larry,  You are really twisted! Shocked lol

I cought a buck on a bed at spencer that was less than a lb.  That makes it what a year or two max.

unless, of course, it was just NESTERBATING!  LOL

glen,  the little 1 lb buck bass was fanning the bed.  I dont know if he was old enough to do anything but, nonetheless he was fanning and went right back on after caught.

So this male was a yearling at most two.  Maybe the females take longer.

The smallest female with eggs was just under two pounds.  Dont know for sure just telling the facts as i see them.

Glenn,

Good post. Based on what has been published in the scientific literature, largemouth and smallmouth bass reach sexual maturity in about 3 years. However, in southern latitudes where they grow much faster, they can become sexual mature (producing viable offspring) in 1 year and as small as 5-7 inches!  Where we live however, it takes males about 3 years and many females 4 years before they are ready to spawn....nevertheless, I'm sure (based on what I've read and seen) that younger males may exhibit spawning behavior when in fact they are not sexually mature. Hope this helps.
