ok guys so some manufacturers are selling these things for $40-50 and you can make one yourself for around twelve dollars.  Lowes  sells the handles for $9 and home depot sells 3/32 plastic wrapped cable for 35 cents a foot and the ferrules for a few dollars to use as stops.  i'll try and post a picture from my phone, but tacklewarehouse sells one that  looks like the end result. 

Super easy to do and the cable will last for years.  No more broken ropes!
