Hey guys I just got that quantum PT tour edition from cabelas and i cannot seem to dial it in.  I'm not sure if its the magnetic braking system or what but it makes a a loud humming sound when i cast and the backlashing when i try and put something on it is giving me a head ache!! I got the counter balance right and I'm very familiar with baitcasting reals, this is my first quantum however.  Is the sound normal or should it be smooth? thanks for your feedback.

Sounds like perhaps you should have considered the Citica or Curado.  Then there wouldn't be very much sound when you cast.

You will find from manufacture to manufacture that there is alot of differences.  Thats why most guys stick to one brand.  I have owned most of the major brands and like them all.  Shimano, Quantum, Daiwa, and Abu.  Each have their own special little setup.  Keep toying with it.  Start by putting all the magnetic brakes on and the centrifugal cranked down, in a complete no backlash mode.  Then slowy work back from there.  You wll find a happy medium by playing with the two different braking systems.  From there you can then make micro adjustments for different lure weights as you fish throughout the day.

Seems to me like Quantum's are typically louder than other brands.  Hearing KVD's reel sing on TV makes me cringe sometimes.  I have heard good things about them though.  I have an older accurist that I've had no problems with.  Love the PTI spinning reels

There is one other thing you can try AJ. While the Centrifugal brakes are at maximum, you may also need to set the spool tension. The knurled knob under the drag starwheel. I always set that before a day's casting. I hold the rod tip at a 45 degree angle, thumb the button and let the line run out until the lure hits the floor, water or whatever...... it should fall smoothly, with very little overrun when the lure hits. Adjust it so that you get a bare half turn overrun, that might also make a difference.

What line and lure are you throwing with the reel? Lighter lures don't pull the line off the spool as well as heavier ones do, and if the lure creates a lot of drag like a spinnerbait with a big skirt, or a large billed crankbait with not much weight to it then it could be the case that the lure is slowing down before the spool does..... not surprising with any PT reel since they spin really fast and smoothly. This would be enough to give anyone problems unless you can "thumb" the spool to control its speed to match that of the lure.

Hey AJ, if you can make it, bring it to the meeting so we can see what its doing and maybe see something wrong.......or at least offer a set up tip or two.

AJ, ya gotta love all of the advice.  I have three NEW TE1170PT's and they are a little louder than my Shimano's, but not to the point your talking about.  Let the guys look at it if you go to the meeting.  I did receive a misfit in one box about three months ago when I purchased it through SPORTCO, so you might have received a RETURN in a box, depending on where and when you bought it.  I love my NEW PT's and love the high speed return ratios.  Keep on chugging............
