I think I have 3 total right now, so I could loan out to a couple boats at the fish in on American lake and see if we can communicate across the lake.

I have a set I purchased some years back. I purchased them to communicate with my wife from my boat back to camp at Banks Lake. There was so much traffic on every channel that it was difficult to communicate, also Steamboat Rock blocked signal. We gave up on them, didn't work for us the way we wanted.

I have some for hunting, the range is determined by line of sight.  Certain frequencies/channels transmit further.  My early ones were 50 a piece with a 5 mile range.  Just got a newer one that claims 25 mile range last year.  Got it in a 3 pack at amazon for 120 for 3.

When I go on cruises with my car group, we carry one and it has helped quite a bit with people getting lost or those up front telling those in the rear about police ahead.  I think you should have one in your boat at all times anyway for safety reasons.

I'm all for it. I would use mine if others carried theirs since cell service is usually pretty spotty on many lakes.

I was talking to Karl about this during the tournament that we should carry one of these in our boats in case something happens especially at some of the bigger lakes.  What do you guys think?  Some areas like Banks has very little cell coverage.
