I have had a recurring notion that suspended fish occur more here in the NW than we have imagined. But it will take some real dedication and commitment on the part of an angler to spend the time and energy to decipher when and where it applies on our lakes. Still, imagine the advantage of cracking the suspended code here in Washington! I'm tempted...

Smitty, is that line of the Jewish faith??? Any relation to Oscar? I like to use braid for topwater, it floats real well and I find that with no stretch, bites tend not to need a hookset, the fish set themselves though I do use a soft rod.

Faz

Just to add to the discussion...Regardless of the application, I generally favor a longer rod simply because of the leverage factor. I like long casts regardless of presentation, flipping, splitshotting, drop shotting, etc. The longer rod and my height makes for good hook sets. Food for thought.

KH.

Watch out where you put some of your plastics. Always lay them on a plastic bag or something. The oils on those baits will eat through plastic tackle boxes, boat carpets and take the varnish off your kitchen table. I heard the Power Bait scents and plastics are bad for that.

Have a couple packs of the double wides. And it is definitely a chunk o plastic. Definitely a dirty water, big fish bait with little application outside of Silver Lake. Maybe the dirty water in Banks for largies...
Chad,
Yeah, I really thought that with the tough waves and the south end getting no pressure, that would have been a real productive area with all the deep water humps, 3.5 hrs of no bites on Saturday proved me wrong. On reflecting on the tourney, all of our biggest fish came out of 18 to 25 ft range for the tourney. We caught alot of fish deeper than that but no size. As for the doodling, I was really amazed by the two boats right by us on Sunday. They watched us catch 15 fish right next to them and had to see what we were doing. But would never change. When I switched to the drop shot rig, I had a real short leader and tried to simulate the shaking thing, but for some reason the fish just didn't go...... The moral of the story is let the FISH tell you what they want not a preconcieved notion of what YOU think they want.

Mark

I'm still pondering this technique, reading articles here & there. Another similar & interesting plot is to stick a straight tailed worm on a ballhead jig, hook exposed, 10 lb line. Swim it over weeds, ticking the tops. When it gets hung, give it a yank. Any observing bass will jump all over it, a classic reaction strike. In-Fisherman's Lindner boys were big on this technique, and I'd bet it would work well here in the right circumstances.
So, has anybody done it? Getting hungup is a key part of the technique, so I might be pretty good at it. C&R, Steve

I actually bought one last year. I think it will work really well, the problem I had was that one of my bilge pumps is mounted directly inline with the drain plug hole so it would not allow a straight run of the cable. In simulated tests it performed well, locking and unlocking fairly easily although I would have preferred some texturing on the knob which can get slippery. As long as I can find the small cable clip, I will be selling this item (removed from packaging, but never installed) for $14.

I have an older model 3d finder..... it may not be spot on, but it does give you more information than a 2d.

Imagine crossing a large laydown tree, the 2d simply shows a bump, which could be a small hump or a 20 foot long tree, but since you crossed over it, you only see a "bump". The 3d will show the difference between a hump and a tree, even if the detail is not great.

I've no idea about the Matrix system, but I am interested in the new Humminbird large screen machines with 3d.

Just my personal preference.

I just found a really great price on 5" Tiki Sticks at this website: http://www.hookerztackle.com/pgtikistik5inch.html

At $3 for a pack of 10, they got my attention. Psstt! Green Pumpkin!! My experience is that this bait equals the real Senko.
C&R, Steve
PS: I tried to run through an order...they use PayPal, which I have never done. Also, I could not order the standard colors correctly (I think)...got two colors at once, "first six colors, and second six colors"...haven't found a way around this, and can't get the email link to work, either. But the price is great, so if anybody gets it figured out, how about posting the solution?

I agree with Chris, and the one thing I TRY to follow up on is NEVER to take both fish off a bed at one time. On the very few occasions I have found bedding fish in pairs, I tend to try for one.... if I get the smaller one I will perhaps keep it in the livewell for a few minutes until I can hopefully catch the "momma" and then release the "buck" to go guard the nest while Mum takes a ride. To this end I always use clips and mark my fish when they go into the livewell. Since this has only happened to me two three times, I am currently able to do this 100% of the time.

Don, with the clear water we usually have, I think most would agree that Pitching is most likely to be more useful than Flipping. While they are both up close, short range and heavy duty tackle, I don't find the rod & reel to be similar at all. I like a 6.5' pitching rod, and the flipping rods are 7.5 to 8'. For pitching, I like a 6.2:1 Shimano Curado with left crank, but on my Flipping rod, I have a 5:1 ABU with right crank. I can't pitch with a flipping rod for any length of time, and get less distance than with the 6.5' rod. I haven't tried flipping in years, after a car accident (rear ended) made my left arm numb for a few years. At the time, it hampered my coordination with the left hand, but I might give it another try, if I find a lake that seems suitable. Meanwhile, I do a lot of pitching and what I call
"pitch/skipping" with spinning rigs. Being able to get the bait to where the fish are likely to be is real important, and one of the things that makes Bassin' so interesting and challenging. Visualize where a fish should be positioned and put that bait in there!
C&R, Steve

I used to use some of the "Wart" series. Did catch some fish, but they don't run very consistently, turn upside down during the last quick part of the retreive and some strange things like that. I like the Excalibur Fat Free Shad in Crawdad for a fairly deep crank. They seem to run great, right out of the pack. I admit that I am not a crankin' kinda guy. Still, when it's summer and there's a squall coming in, it's time to get out a crank or spinner. The Rapala and other Pradco stuff works well also. I do prefer plastic cranks to wood ones. They'll bounce off a concrete bridge piling without more than a tiny paint chip. The wood ones will be damaged, and will then either break or soak up water. I would prefer to have plastic cranks without rattles, if I could. I like stuff that's pretty snag resistant...less frustrating, less work, fewer spooked fish, etc....Plastics!
C&R, Steve

Yes, my biggest fish at chelan came on a lipless. It was a white and yellow combo. That big smallie ( 5lb 12oz) came out of 20ft of water to hit that bait. It was so awesome to nail a huge fish like that. The second day I got two more good ones and missed two. The rat l trap payed dividends. What was strange was that I could n't get fish to hit a diving crank bait. For tri cities throw a chrome blue combo or white blue combo.

Mark

Ah! My favorite time to fish. Sea Doos, skiers, and most others leave the water. Now I have the entire lake all to myself, nobody bothering me and relaxed bass. On full moons dark body baits and most any color on dark nights. Topwaters on a full moon when the bass are aggressive ------HEAVEN!!!! Also I do well with drop shot, pig & jig, splitshot, texasrig, just about anything that you throw in day light. Water clarity determins the noise factor for me, but I almost always use a crank or topwater with rattles of some type. Plastics I throw the same as in the day. I use a radio on low depth finder beeping to allow people on shore to pick up on the boat. However if another boat starts up I light the boat up. I have talked to many duputies checking boat ramps at night and not had any problems with not using my running lights while only using the trolling moter. Remember though I fish Small waters at night. This year I am going to use a couple of solar powered yard lights to make the boat more visible. If you let your eyes adjust to the dark you can see better than you think. The trick is to learn to read the shadows. And it helps to fish a lake you know well. Most people will never know your there and those who do are ok if they see you. Night bassing is like any other new technique --time,learn,confidence--and when all else fails lots of questions. .
Troy,

If you think about it, you answer your own question....If they were tossing bait fish, you probably want to use minnows of some sort. I usually attribute these times to just not getting it right that day.
Everything I have read, heard, etc is 3 days before and 3 days after the full moon is the best fishing, if you note in the various magazines that have lunar/astro tables they always identify best fishing within these times.
I saw a study of all the world record fish caught, ( all species) and the vast majority were caught in this window. I belive it was J. Henshalls book of black bass but don't quote me on that. The article showed probably 85% of the world record fish caught in and around full moons.

Some more evidence... how many large tournaments are in this window..... for a reason I suspect.

As far as whether they are too full, keep in mind that feeding is only one of several reasons bass bite. Roland Martin claims the following 8 other reasons, Reflex Actions, anger, protective instinct, curiosity, competition, territorial instinct, killer instinct, and ingnorance. Buy them all if you like but I feel pretty certain it isn't just cause their feeding, and I would question if a a bass ever gets full.

Interesting topic though.... To support your contention, I was once up at LakeCushman right after a hatch of some bug that was like a carpet on the lake... I fished for about 4 hours without a trout bite, even once.

1) What one technique or lure are you the most confident with? If you had something to teach someone else who was new to bass fishing, or teach a seminar, what would you have most to share about?

Drop Shot & Buzz Bait

2) What one techique or lure is foreign to you? What's the next bass fishing tool on your list of things to learn?

Not foreing to me but I need to build confidence in deep water carolina rigging. Using an 1/2 ounce weight with a lizard or 6' worm. I think the problem with this is I have never had a sonar to find bottom structure and fish.

3) Is there a technique or lure you used to throw successfully but somehow got away from over the years because of the latest new lure craze?

I stick to the basics. All the fancy lures don't entice me. I caught quantity and quality fish the same way before when they did not exist. But I would have to say jitter bug, rapala, Mepps. Thats what I started bass fishing with.

So anyone wanna give me a lesson on sonars? Im gonna purchase one in the next few weeks.

THX
