Page 16, tournaments are an organized boating event. Also a requirement on navigable waters such as Lake Washington, Lake Samamish, and Columbia River anytime you are boating on those waters.

It is a club rule.  Also, every major circuit and most every open tournament require them.

No problem, I have some old one that are about to expire and I noticed shipping on new ones if bought online are outrageous because they are hazardous. I'll pick some new ones up.

The following vessels are not required to carry day signals, but must
carry night signals when operating from sunset to sunrise:
•  Recreational boats less than 16 feet in length .
•  Boats participating in organized events, such as races, regattas,
or marine parades .

Pay attention when you purchase, I've seen flares with six months to expiration date on store shelves.

I think I bought a flare gun setup from Auburn Sports, but aren't regular hand waved flares sufficient ?

Thanks to everyone participating in this discussion.  Karl generously gave me a set of flares last year at Potholes, as I didn't know of this rule.  Also, where does one obtain the carbon monoxide warning stickers, and what does it take to get them?

Do the flares have to be aerial flares or can they just be handheld over the side of the boat?  Aerial flairs that you launch from your hand are about $68 for four, and hand held flares that you hold over the side of the boat are like $31 for four.  This is what they are selling for at West Marine.

The rules just say "flares", I bought the hand kind. If not then they need to clarify the rules.

Both are ok as long as they are day or night use and you need three of them.
