Payseno-Garrett report from Chelan/Tri-Cities

Hello all,

I'm in Yakima right now with Bob on a 5 day fishing trip. It started with 2 days on Roosevelt for the NW Bass tourney...congrats to Lyle and his daughter on a masterful performance. We fished Chelan on Sunday and had a pretty horrible day...very hot, and only a half a dozen dinks for our efforts. Hopefully fishing will improve for the tourney, or other anglers will figure the lake out. Tri-Cities was another story. We had a number of summer spots that have produced in the past, and sure enough, one spot in particular was awesome as we carolina-rigged lizards and tubes and caught 6 fish between 2 1/4 and 3 1/4 lbs, and of course a few dinks to round out the bunch. The best part of the day was the last 30 minutes. We decided to go topwater right before dark, and Bob pulled up to a grass flat on the Snake River that we had never fished before. Third cast with a buzzbait and I caught a 3 1/2 pound smallie that literally inhaled the thing after it hit the water. All told, our 5 biggest were around 15 lbs. I don't have very many days on the water like today, and it was such a thrill to share it with Bob. One more day left, and hopefully tomorrow will be just as memorable.

Tight Lines,
Danny

Danny,
Thanks for taking the time to share your efforts with the rest of us working saps.  Hope the rest of your journey works out as well.

Grin Hah! This coming from a guy who just got back from a week fishing vacation! I love it. Day 2 on Tri-Cities wasn't quite as productive. We tried all new spots further up the river by Columbia Point. The river was ripping and much harder to fish than the area around the Snake. Although our midday fishing was not as productive, the last hour was awesome again. We found another grassy flat along some riprap and just started chucking, Bob with his Chugbug, me with my buzzbait. I caught 2 and Bob caught 5 or 6 in about 40 minutes, all between 2 and 2 1/2 pounds. It was so much fun. Lots of great blowups, aerials and tailwalks from our beloved smallies. They are really hopped up right now with all this warm weather.

Danny

Danny,
Do me a fovor and try rip fishing some stick baits in the eddy's formed by man-made structures in the main river channel, like bridge piers nad the old tug boat tie ups that dot the river.  Did real well this way a summer or two ago, and just curious about it.

Kirk,

Unfortunately, we are back in Seattle now, so I don't know if I can give that a go any time soon. It's funny you mentioned that because I had a jerkbait tied on all week and only threw it a few times at Chelan. Not sure why I didn't try it on Tri-Cities after just watching VanDam win the classic jerking that rogue through current breaks. We did catch a good number of small fish on a current break right outside the mouth of the Yakima using crankbaits and lipless...why didn't I throw the jerkbait!?! Oh well, I will keep that in mind for next time.
