Ah! My favorite time to fish. Sea Doos, skiers, and most others leave the water. Now I have the entire lake all to myself, nobody bothering me and relaxed bass. On full moons dark body baits and most any color on dark nights. Topwaters on a full moon when the bass are aggressive ------HEAVEN!!!! Shocked Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Shocked Shocked  Also I do well with drop shot, pig & jig, splitshot, texasrig, just about anything that you throw in day light. Water clarity determins the noise factor for me, but I almost always use a crank or topwater with rattles of some type. Plastics I throw the same as in the day.  I use a radio on low depth finder beeping to allow people on shore to pick up on the boat. However if another  boat starts up I light the boat up. I have talked to many duputies checking boat ramps at night and not had any problems with not using my running lights while only using the trolling moter. Remember though I fish Small waters at night. This year I am going to use a couple of solar powered yard lights to make the boat more visible. If you let your eyes adjust to the dark you can see better than you think. The trick is to learn to read the shadows. And it helps to fish a lake you know well. Most people will never know your there and those who do are ok if they see you. Night bassing is like any other new technique --time,learn,confidence--and when all else fails  lots of questions. Grin Grin Grin. I have been fishing at night for about fifteen years and love it . Grin

Legally, you have to keep your stern light ON when fishing or anchored. My backseater will usually put a paper or styro cup over it while fishing, to improve their night vision. I like the fluorescent lights, but don't use the 'black' light bulb, because it doesn't do anything unless you're using fluorescent line, and mine isn't. I use the regular bulb option so I can see docks, cables, floats, etc. The lights I have are BPS cheapos. I plug 'em into the boat. They don't use much power, unlike incandescent bulbs, but if you want, they run on flashlight batteries. I'd use NiMH rechargeables.

Keep your life jacket on...avoid going alone. Full moon = night fishing delight. New moon...nah. Too dark, not a lot of fun.  I have stayed out all night, until 7am, on two occasions. The bite really shut down after 11pm/midnight, and didn't start up again until the sun started coming up again. Plus, I just about froze to death in July, fairly decently dressed for it, on Lk. Sawyer...jeans, sweatshirt, windbreaker, cap, joggers...not enough.

Homeowners get paranoid when you don't have your lights on, so keep them on. Talk low, but talk, or have a radio on low. It freaks folks out when you sneak up on them in the dark. I've been similarly freaked when swimmers were talking in the middle of Lk. Sawyer at 11pm. I was in a canoe that night. It'd be easy (and unpleasent) to run over some swimmers in the middle of the night. I don't think they're very smart to be swimming across the lake in the dark, but they do.

I use spinning tackle a lot in daylight, but after dark, it's time for baitcasters. I mostly just throw a white spinnerbait at night, but I'd consider a Senko with a rattle or tube bait with a rattle, if you haven't got dialed into baitcasters. The white spinner works fine for the fish, and I can see it a lot better. I've thrown dark ones, while my backseater was throwing white ones, and not much difference in bites. I like a Tandem with a Willow and small Colorado, and just do the Jimmy Houston Retreive...chunk and wind. Smallies are a gas at night, highly recommended. Keep your spare rods in the rod locker, so you don't step on them or knock them overboard.  Be sure to have a lock on your hitch stinger, so it doesn't walk away while you're out fishing.  C&R, Steve

I recommend having a headlamp that shoot out pretty far so you can see the shore.  I'll come in handle when you are retying.  I also carry one of those big candle light.  Just make sure both are charge and works before heading out.  Big, dark lures that produces a lot of sound and vibration have been working for me and work them slow so the fish can zone into it.  Don't forget the bug spray too.

There are alot of L.E.D. hand and stationary lights on the market and I would recommend them as it sucks when you sap your main battery on accessories. I am going to Sportsmens Warehouse to get a couple of the hat brim L.E.D. lights, they last about 6 hours continuous but two or three days if used sparingly.

i fished for the first time a night, and it was great!  i would like to do more of it, especially with this hot weather we are having.

i have a few questions regarding night fishing.  what safety equipment do you suggest for night fishing?  as for lighting, can you retro fit your own boat lights [bow and stern lights], or do they have to be certified and approved by the coast guard.

if i can purchase a decent set, i would rather do that, but i would like them to be led, and also small / slim.

is there any other gear or tackle you can suggest?  i simply use what i use during the day, except for buzz baits, and top water lures.

is there a time when bass spot feeding at night?  as i fished the whole night, until the crack of dawn.  i was going to fish at dawn, but i wasnt ready to stay up all that time.  next time i definately will be prepared.
