VP Tournament talk

Hey Western!

I hope you all have been fishing because the club is catching some of the
biggest fish I have seen and in big numbers!

I have been very happy with how this club has the ability to just drop everything and lend a hand to folks in their time of need. It never fails that if I need help with something at a tournament you all are right there and I appreciate this very much.

With that, let's discuss our last tournament at Potholes. The points race began with a BANG…or rather, a GUST, as the weather gave us a little reminder of who is in charge. With 35 mph winds and spitting rain, it was at times challenging for all involved. At times it was damaging. At least 6 boats suffered breakdowns or damage in the 2-4 ft. swells.

But as they say, "When you have it, you have it" and Kirk Holmes HAD IT as he fought his way back from being towed in on day one by the illustrious Mr. Shin Tanaka. Having to fish out of a different boat on day two, Kirk won the tournament with 27 lb. 13 oz. and took big fish with a hefty 5-4 largemouth to boot!

Second place went to Russ Baker with 24 lb. 1 oz. Third went to Lyle Logston with 22 lb. 15 oz. The rest of the standings can be seen on the next page of the newsletter.

We now prepare for June 21st and 22nd, the Banks Lake leg of the points race. Kirk Holmes again stands to be a factor as he is awesome on this lake. We will get started with a Driver's Meeting at 0430 near the Coulee Playland launch ramp. Blast off will be at 0530. Remember, you have to be ready on time. As the weather reminded us last month, if we have some preventive maintenance and troubleshooting issues to attend to on this large fishery, we do not want to get caught unprepared. I would like to stress, too, that we all need to attend to our livewell systems as we get into the hot weather months. Remember to keep an extra bag or two of ice around and some "Please Release Me" additives to help with stressed fish. I would like to have a zero mortality report to turn in this time.

Camping has been arranged by the club at Coulee Playland Resort. Hal and the gang look forward to our arrival every year, so remember to stop into the store and help support the folks who make us feel so welcome every year. Please see the next newsletter page for directions to Coulee Playland

I hope to see you out there and I look forward to all the fun to be had!
